just wanted to share some photos of what this beautiful city has been turned into. the photos are, at the very least, pretty representative of how i will remember things, as most of my own encounters have been accidentally running into mobs of riot police while just trying to get home at night, or accidentally running into protests as they cover the city. it has been at this intensity for a week, though the riot cops have been here intermittently since march, and protests have been going on for ages. only lately have the cops become a 24/7 presence along with noisy helicopters circling in the sky, and the SQ has been called in. now that it’s almost illegal to protest and the more massive (200,000+ people, apparently) displays of civil disobedience have happened, students are still being kettled and arrested by the hundreds, and every night at 8pm they’ve started going out in neighbourhood pockets along with other people in the community with their pots and pans to raise hell. i have tried a few times to write something about it all but i can’t. the passion and uprising is beautiful and inspiring but it’s all marred by the hideous fact that it’s illegal and very dangerous to do so. the mere existence of law 78 and the actions of authorities over the past week have left me feeling so disappointed and so disillusioned with establishments that i naively and blindly trusted, and uncertain as to what will happen next. i will be wearing the red square (which is now somehow illegal to wear) not because i’m against the tuition hikes, but because i can’t believe i’m not allowed to say whether i am or not. and! i’m moving closer to downtown next week! never a dull moment.
